Charcoal Huts

Winner of the Under £100k Category

The Charcoal Huts are the Bute Community Forest’s new eco-tourism venture and have been shortlisted in the sustainable design and the under £100,000 categories. They consist of two small, off grid, timber accommodating huts and two composting WC cubicles of the same timber construction.

Funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and designed and built to a very tight budget of £38k by local company getMade Design, the overall concept is a well-considered, low impact, site specific off-grid Hut which sits sympathetically within the woodland landscape. The Charcoal Huts provide all-weather structures to allow visitors to experience the spectacular landscape all year round and will generate vital income for the charity to contribute its community engagement and nature conservation work. They are an excellent example of public funds being successfully engaged to promote social enterprise and financial sustainability of charitable organisations.
