Helensburgh Leisure Centre

Helensburgh Leisure Centre has been shortlisted in both the aesthetic design (large scale) and community-led regeneration categories. The project aims to reinvigorates the town’s historic pierhead with a vibrant, focal point community building. DB3 Architecture worked in partnership with civil, structural and geotechnical engineers to deliver the complex and technical project that features a 6 lane 25m pool, a learner pool with movable floor, fitness suite, dance & activity studio, café and ancillary facilities.

The design concept for the Helensburgh Leisure Centre was the creation of exciting physical and visual connections between the incredible site and the public building. The site was platformed to a height of 2.1m above existing level to combat climate change and flooding. This was protected by rock armour from the Dumbuck Quarry in Dumbarton. A rich palette of very high-quality materials was chosen where the colours and textures reflect the townscape and natural coastal features. The project has undertaken a well-attended and lively process of community engament, and subsequently provides a vital community facility within Helensburgh town centre.
