Hermitage Park was developed as a public park in the early 20^th century and originally formed the grounds of a private house with views over the Firth of Clyde. The landform of the area, with the valley of Milligs burn a major topographic feature, dictates the layout of a large proportion of the site. Aspects of the site go back much further in time, particularly the history of Milligs mill and its associated features.
