Rockfield Centre

Winner of the Community Led Regeneration Category

The Rockfield Centre is B-Listed former school and has been shortlisted in the community-led regeneration category. The renovation, led by Page/Park Architects provides a mix of community, performance arts, heritage and social enterprise / business centre. The building had suffered from several years of neglect until 2015, when it was saved by its community from accelerated deterioration and plans for demolition. A group of local people with the requisite skills formed the new Oban Communities Trust and was able to source a series of grant awards to purchase the building and start a new project to refurbish. From very early in their journey the Trust had been consulting and listening to the community and four clear core themes were identified for what the building should strive to facilitate: Arts & Culture, History & Heritage, Enterprise & Education, and Community Wellbeing.

The aim was to create a truly sustainable building that will meet the changing needs of the community. The strategy was light touch, to create a core of permanent services and spaces into which changing uses can function. The layout and variety of spaces has suited the community’s need for spaces of various sizes and character. The priorities of former generations for daylight and ventilation have been reinstated, revealing its high-ceilinged spaces and large sash windows, these supplemented by restoration of its passive ventilation system.
