Taigh an Ailtire

Winner of the Small Scale Category

Taigh An Ailtire is a new build private dwellinghouse on Tiree designed by John Patience of Studio Gunna, which been shortlisted in the aesthetic design (small scale) category. The house has been designed to sit comfortably within the unique historic built environment of the island. The house was designed to be in context with the historic architectural environment seen throughout the island and to establish how the traditional blackhouse (if they had not been abandoned in favour of the newer 1 ½ storey white houses from 1870 onwards ) could have evolved as a contemporary design solution rather than a pastiche copy of the original.

The U-shaped plan exterior walls project forward of the roofline and read as 1200 wide at the window jambs externally (reflecting the wall depth of the original blackhouse) but internally contain storage, kitchen, library and inglenook accommodation. Full height frame free windows have been incorporated to capitalize on the views on both side of the house, the perimeter wall has been extended beyond the upperfloor and contains a walled garden and a studio. Sloping buttresses have been added to the ends of the front and rear walls. Which create the impression that the building is ‘anchored’ into the landscape and reflects the original raking walls. The spaces between the buttresses contain the plant rooms, sauna and greenhouse.
